Resolving Conflicts Peacefully

(For more info. on Social Media conflicts, attend WESD family presentation Tuesday, November 12, 6-7:30pm in the WCS MPR)

WESD’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum, Caring School Community helps teach children how to resolve conflicts peacefully. Students practice speaking to each other respectfully while expressing their feelings and needs. Students discuss common conflict scenarios with their peers and find compromises and solutions together.

Teaching children how to resolve conflicts peacefully is a valuable part of SEL that families can support at home. Kids learn these skills best by observing adults who model respectful communication and healthy conflict resolution. When disagreements arise, calmly discussing feelings, taking turns to listen, and finding solutions together show children how to handle similar situations with others. Practicing these skills at home helps kids understand empathy, patience, and compromise. Peaceful conflict resolution not only strengthens relationships within the family but also equips children to manage social interactions at school, build friendships, and handle challenges in healthy ways as they grow. By fostering these skills, parents help children develop emotional resilience, positive connections, confidence, independence, and self-help skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

This is an example of a Home-Connection Activity in the 5th grade.  It highlights the SEL skill of peacefully resolving conflicts.
